This six-week short learning programme will help you to understand the basics of photography and some of the techniques practiced by professionals.
This programme consists of six lessons presented once a week and a practical outing. It will help you to understand the basics of photography and some of the techniques practiced by professionals, to ensure that you can consistently produce excellent photographs. It is designed to advance you from a beginner to intermediate level of photography. You will be taught how to set the camera to manual and bulb modes, and shown how to use the light meter, motor drive and self-timer. Students using a digital camera will be taught how to change colour balance and file size setting, as well as changing lenses, setting focus modes, zooming, etc.
Lecturers will take you through the course step-by-step, imparting knowledge to ensure that you can consistently produce excellent photographs. You will be required to complete projects and assignments during the course. These are evaluated in class. The final lesson is an exciting early morning outing with the lecturers to put into practice all that you have learnt.
To complete the course you need a single lens reflex camera with manual control, a built-in light meter and a tripod.

Time exposure photography
Lesson 2
History of photography - understanding film / digital, the f-stop, basic mechanics
Lesson 3
Shutters and apertures, the situation, depth of field, light meter readings
Lesson 4
Understanding lenses, flash and fill-in flash photography, creative filters, and white balance
Lesson 5
Guidelines to composition & visual communications
Lesson 6
3 hour practical outing, scheduled early on a Sunday morning (time to be advised)
Wrap up and constructive advice from the lectures on the photographs taken during the practical outings

On completion of the Intermediate course, it is recommended that students first complete Dynamic and Expressive Photography courses before enrolling on any of a wide range of masters classes such as Fine Art, Landscape, Travel and Wildlife Photography.
