The Principles of Strategic Thinking aims to improve the quality of the student’s thinking and the ability to innovate and strategise in a brand building context. This course focuses on new brand paradigm thinking and is based on the concept of strategic and holistic thinking. Students are introduced to the definition and theories of strategy. The term strategic conceptual thinking is explored by introducing students to the nature, forms and elements of logical thinking and argumentation.
The innovation economy, which is bombarded with media clutter, audience fragmentation and message dilution, is introduced. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of brand ideas that are distinct and resonate with a changing stakeholder. Furthermore, the course focuses on forward thinking as well as proactive and strategic innovative thinking, and provides an overview of the theoretical and practical elements linked to these areas.
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of strategic conceptual thinking in the innovation economy
- Demonstrate the ability to use strategic thinking as a tool for developing strategic innovation and creating brand ideas within the South African business environment
- Apply independent analytical and creative processes for brand leverage
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ten faces of innovation and providing a brand solution

DURATION: 5 Months
CLASS SCHEDULE:
Tuesday and Thursday evenings 17h30 to 20h30, starting 24 January 2012 (Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria)
Tuesday and Thursday evenings 17h30 to 20h30, starting 17 July 2012 (Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town)
FEES: R11 400.00 (50% deposit and the balance in three payments before the end of the programme)
Please note: Candidates who complete the short learning programme and wish to enrol for the Advanced Diploma in Brand Innovation may apply for internal credits towards the Advanced Diploma if they meet the entry criteria as indicated below:
ENTRY CRITERIA:
- A Diploma or relevant equivalent (HEQF level 6) or;
- A relevant 240-credit qualification, including the NQF level 5 Diploma in Communication Management currently offered on Vega sites
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
- There is a R500 deposit payable on application for all programmes. Should you cancel your application you will forfeit this deposit. Should you attend the course, the amount will be deducted off your fees.
- On any programme shorter than 10 weeks, the full amount of the course is payable 14 days prior to the start date of the course.
- Should you enrol within 14 days before the start date of a programme shorter than 10 weeks, the full fee will be due and payable.

- No telephonic or verbal commitments will be considered; payment secures enrolment.
- Enrolment fees are only refundable should the course, for whatever reason, be cancelled.
- Further Cancellation Policy as follows: Cancellation from date of registration to Session 4, the 50% deposit will be retained and everything else refunded. After the session no fees will be refunded and students paying in installments will be liable for the remainder of the fees.
- Students must comply with and sign the Vega Code and Compass where all terms and conditions are clearly stipulated.
- Cheques must be made in favour of “The Independent Institute of Education”.
- Budget Plan payments on credit card can be arranged.
- All courses require a minimum enrolment of 10 students. Should there be insufficient enrolments to make the course feasible to run, the programme may be postponed or cancelled.
