Petra & Co. is a startup and growing interior design and furniture procurement business specialising in educational spaces (primarily schools).
This is a flexible, remote role with occasional site visits in Gauteng. The position is for March 2026 - November 2026, with potential for extension or further employment if additional projects arise. Workload is variable: typically 2-3 hours per day, with occasional fuller days, during peak project phases (about 10 hours a week). You'll work independently, reporting directly to the owner, who prefers a hands-off management style.
This role suits someone looking for a secondary or additional freelance gig alongside other commitments.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate between clients (schools and educational institutions) and stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution.
- Develop design concepts for spaces based on school identity, spatial requirements, and client briefs. Create conceptual floor plans and layouts (proficiency in Revit or similar software is a plus, though not currently required in our workflow).
- Specify interior finishes, including flooring, paint, lighting, and other elements.
- Manage FF&E (furniture, fixtures, and equipment) procurement: source items, negotiate prices with suppliers, obtain client approvals, and handle budgets.
- Oversee project timelines, including deliveries, installations, returns, and infrastructure checks (e.g., ensuring electrical, venting, or security requirements for items like TVs or 3D printers).
- Conduct site visits in Gauteng as needed to assess spaces, monitor installations, and resolve on-site issues.
- Maintain organization across multiple projects, tracking details to avoid delays or complications. Communicate confidently with suppliers, contractors, clients, and schools, pushing back when necessary to meet deadlines and quality standards.
- Handle client and stakeholder expectations, ensuring all parties are aligned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Candidates with 2-5 years preferred; strong juniors with relevant skills encouraged to apply.
- Proven track record in concept development, FF&E procurement, and managing complex timelines (experience in the education sector is a strong bonus).
- Strong organizational skills: self-motivated, accountable, and able to work independently without micromanagement.
- Confidence in your work and decision-making, with a no-nonsense approach to dealing with suppliers and contractors.
- Experience with remote work setups.
- Based in Gauteng for site visits; must have own reliable car, valid driver's license, and own computer/laptop. Proficiency in design software (e.g., SketchUp, or Revit, Canva) and standard tools like Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
